Prof. Anton Scheurink is Professor of Neuroendocrinology in the Centre for Behaviour and Neurosciences. He studied biology and was awarded a PhD in animal physiology by the University of Groningen. In both cases, he graduated with distinction. After a period working as a postdoc researcher in the US, Scheurink returned to the University of Groningen, where he was appointed professor in 2011. He also spent time working as the research coordinator in the Anorexia Center of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Scheurink specializes in the neural arrangement of the body’s metabolism and the regulation of body weight (with a special focus on the role of the brain in eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and extreme obesity).
In January 2015, he was voted University of Groningen Lecturer of the Year. Scheurink loves to talk about the practical implementation of theory and developments in the fields of energy balance, diabetes, obesity and anorexia nervosa. He occasionally invites a ‘real’ patient to come to his lecture to help explain such issues.
